Kimberly Kubus, born as Kim Okkerstrøm, and sometimes known online as Sparlatacus, was a Game Maker developer most famous for his perennial Johnny series. He had created over 150 games in Game Maker since 2002. Generally his games were negatively received online, but he loved them and kept making them at a furious pace. Kubus would later establish a cult following that loved his games just for how weird they were, not dissimilar to Vasily Zotov and his games. His friend Clysm would go on to release a Johnny fan game titled Johnny's Nightmare.
Biography[]
Kubus was born in 1986 in Norway, adopting a love for game development as a child in the early 90's after receiving a copy of Klik & Play software. He would later adopt the nom de guerre "Kimberly Kubus" in 2001 as a reference to the Norwegian clothing outlet Cubus, which his sister felt was not fashionable. Over most of the 2000's, Kubus was a prolific creative force online, producing and releasing games, music, art, vlogs, films, and minigames through his website.
Health issues and death[]
Kubus suffered from schizotypal personality disorder, obsessive personality disorder and admitted suffering from Cotard's delusion. Though he'd struggled with mental health for most of his life, his final few years would see his condition worsen as his hair began thinning and he began to rapidly lose teeth and body weight. He was a heavy user of snus tobacco and according to his autobiography page on his website, also experimented with psychoactive drugs.
In May 2014, he committed suicide. In December of the same year, several of his friends and collaborators would confirm his death. Friend and former collaborator Jinxtengu would go on to host a memorial page for Kubus on his website. In April 2017, Clysm would also post a page dedicated to Kubus, titled A Sparlatacus Retrospective, detailing his friendship with Kubus and included many of their first chat logs dating back to 2004. A fan of Kubus' work, the YouTuber and game developer Saint would later post memorial videos dedicated to Kubus and uploaded Let's Plays of all 36 games in the Johnny series.
